First contact
Initial contact is by email or telephone. A brief conversation establishes the nature of the matter, any conflict of interest and the scope of work being considered.
A sole-practitioner Brazilian law office advising founders, brand owners and international counsel on trademarks, copyright and industrial property, from the availability search through prosecution, enforcement and portfolio maintenance.
We are a sole-practitioner law office registered in Brasilia, Federal District, dedicated to intellectual property matters. Our work covers trademarks, copyright, industrial designs and the contentious and non-contentious proceedings that surround them.
We serve Brazilian entrepreneurs registering local marks, foreign counsel filing in Brazil through the Paris Convention or the Madrid Protocol, and rights holders addressing infringement and portfolio maintenance issues.
Every engagement is handled directly by the attorney of record: the same person the client first speaks to opens, prosecutes and closes the file. We operate no case referral scheme, no lead purchase arrangement and no delegation to third parties.
The Horsewood is the trade name under which Vitor Rangel Sociedade Individual de Advocacia publishes its online communications. The domain thehorsewood.online, the trade name and all content published on this website are owned and operated exclusively by the office. No third-party licensing, franchise, referral scheme or intermediation is involved.
Correspondence is accepted in Portuguese and English. Filings before the Brazilian PTO (INPI) and the Brazilian courts are conducted in Portuguese, as required by procedural law.
The work grouped below reflects the office's day-to-day matters. Engagements outside this scope are declined or referred to counsel with the appropriate specialisation.
Availability searches, national filings before the Brazilian PTO (INPI), responses to office actions, opposition and appeal proceedings and portfolio renewal management.
Coordination of Brazilian designations under the Madrid Protocol and priority filings under the Paris Convention, in cooperation with foreign counsel.
Advisory work on authorship, licensing and assignment of literary, artistic and software works, including registration formalities where applicable.
Registration and enforcement of industrial designs and utility models, with attention to novelty analysis and the drafting of representations.
Cease-and-desist correspondence, administrative nullity actions before the INPI and infringement proceedings before the federal courts.
Drafting and review of licensing, assignment, coexistence and technology transfer agreements, including recordal before the INPI where required.
An intellectual property practice chooses trade names deliberately. Here is how ours works.
The Horsewood is the trade name under which Vitor Rangel Sociedade Individual de Advocacia publishes its online communications and receives client enquiries. It is not a separate firm, a franchise or a licensed brand: it is the same office, presenting itself under a distinct commercial identifier for its online storefront.
Adopting a trade name is a routine practice for intellectual property offices. It separates the formal legal designation used in filings before the INPI and the Brazilian courts from the shorter, more memorable identifier used in day-to-day correspondence and online publishing. The choice is deliberate and matches how the office advises its own clients on brand architecture.
The domain thehorsewood.online, the Horsewood name and all content published here are operated by, and belong exclusively to, Vitor Rangel Sociedade Individual de Advocacia. No third-party licensing, franchise, referral scheme, marketing intermediary or resale arrangement is involved. The domain registration, the hosting configuration and every element on this website are the direct responsibility of the office.
A short set of commitments that shape every engagement, from the first email to the closing report.
Initial contact is by email or telephone. A brief conversation establishes the nature of the matter, any conflict of interest and the scope of work being considered.
Before any file is opened, the client receives a written note describing the work to be done, the estimated timeline and the professional fees involved. No engagement begins without written confirmation.
The practice uses no case runners, referral agreements or lead purchase arrangements. Every matter is handled by the attorney of record from opening to closing.
All communications and documents are treated as confidential under professional secrecy rules. Files are stored in access-controlled digital systems and retained for the periods required by applicable law.
We operate under the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) rules on professional conduct. We do not offer guarantees of outcome, do not quote results in advance and do not engage in client solicitation prohibited by the professional code.
Deadlines, filings and office actions are reported to the client and to co-counsel in writing, with reference numbers and expected next steps. No matter proceeds without a documented trail.
Communication was clear from the first email. Every deadline was explained in advance and every filing arrived documented. A quiet, competent working relationship.
We appreciated the honesty at the availability search stage. Rather than filing anyway, the office recommended a name change based on the search results. That saved us a costly opposition later.
The scope note we received before the engagement was one of the clearest we have seen from Brazilian counsel. There were no surprises in billing and no delays in reporting.
Prospective clients and foreign counsel are welcome to write in Portuguese or English. Initial contact is answered within two business days.
Submission opens your email client and forwards the message to the office. Please do not include confidential documents in the first contact.
